The role
We’re seeking an experienced Controller to join our Finance team and help steward the financial resources that advance Austin Community Foundation’s mission. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this role leads the Foundation’s day-to-day financial activities and those of its supporting organizations, including financial reporting, general ledger maintenance, bank and investment reconciliations, the annual budget, audit coordination, and tax return preparation.
This role is ideal for a collaborative, service-oriented financial leader who combines strong technical accounting expertise with sound judgment, clear communication, and a commitment to developing people. The Controller works across all levels of the Foundation to provide friendly, timely, and accurate information to internal and external clients while guiding the accounting staff in daily financial activities.

What you’ll do
As Controller, you’ll help ensure the financial integrity and long-term sustainability of Austin Community Foundation and its supporting organizations. You will lead the Foundation’s core accounting and financial operations, including financial reporting, month-end and year-end close processes, general ledger oversight, cash management, investment accounting, accounts payable, and fund administration. You’ll also support donor-related financial activities such as stock gifts, endowed fund spending calculations, and custom fund reporting.
In partnership with the Chief Financial Officer, you’ll play a key role in developing and monitoring the Foundation’s annual budget, partnering with department leaders on project budgets and financial performance analysis. You’ll lead the annual audit and tax reporting processes, preparing financial statements, coordinating with external auditors, and overseeing compliance with nonprofit and regulatory reporting requirements.
This role serves as a trusted financial advisor across the organization, helping teams navigate accounting questions, improve processes, implement new accounting standards, and ensure compliance with GAAP, fund accounting principles, and charitable giving regulations. You’ll also work closely with investment advisors, managers, and custodians to support the Foundation’s investment operations and cash flow needs.
As a member of the Finance leadership team, you’ll supervise and develop the accounting staff, fostering a collaborative, high-performing environment. You’ll provide coaching, performance feedback, professional development opportunities, and strategic direction while building cross-functional partnerships that support organizational goals and strengthen the Foundation’s impact throughout Central Texas.
What we’re looking for
Required experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance from an accredited four-year university.
- At least seven years of related experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including advanced Excel skills.
- Experience managing a high-performing team.
- Ability to work in the office three days per week.
Bonus skills
- Certified Public Accountant license is strongly preferred.
- Experience managing the audit process.
- Experience in a nonprofit, community foundation, or financial services environment.
- Previous Controller experience.
- Experience with Foundant Community Suite.
- Passion for advancing equity and supporting community-driven change.
