Giving Forward: The Vinson Family Legacy

When Marilyn and Lance Vinson began planning their legacy, they knew they wanted their giving to reflect two things: the causes their family has supported for years—and the community they now call home. Through a planned gift to Austin Community Foundation (ACF), Marilyn and Lance are helping ensure Central Texas will have flexible resources to meet the needs of the future, whatever they may be.

Marilyn Vinson and her son, Eric Vinson

The Vinson family’s connection to Austin started when Marilyn and Lance’s eldest son, Eric, attended The University of Texas School of Law. Years later, Austin became home for Eric and his family, and Marilyn and Lance moved to be closer to them. As they settled into life in Austin, they focused on creating a meaningful life together through attending local events and volunteering across the community.

Giving back has long been part of the Vinson family’s values. Their philanthropic journey began decades ago after their youngest son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as an infant—an experience that connected the family to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and deepened their commitment to helping others.

As their family’s giving evolved each year, Eric encouraged his parents to focus on the impact they could help create close to home. Eric’s longtime involvement in debate led him to discover the Jack Jenkins Charitable Fund at ACF, which supports camp scholarships for young debate students. Through this connection, the Vinsons learned more about ACF’s work across Central Texas, including efforts in housing affordability and education.

When it came time to incorporate philanthropy into their estate plans, Marilyn and Lance included designated gifts to organizations their family has long supported, like JDRF. But following their son’s advice, they also wanted part of their legacy to have broader local impact. ACF’s data-informed approach—and its ability to adapt as community needs change—gave them confidence that their gift could remain meaningful for decades to come.

“I like the fact that it’s not my responsibility to choose,” Marilyn says. “As needs change in a community, [ACF is] going to be changing with them.”

That flexibility was essential to the Vinsons. Rather than placing heavy restrictions on their legacy gift, they chose to trust ACF to respond to evolving challenges and opportunities—so their philanthropy can keep pace with the future.

Marilyn’s advice to others considering their own legacy is simple but powerful, “Don’t assume you can predict the future. There will always be needs like food and healthcare, but being too specific about where your money must go could limit its impact decades from now.”

Through their planned gift, the Vinsons are ensuring their family values—compassion, adaptability, and trust in community—will continue shaping Central Texas for generations to come.
