In uncertain or challenging times, Austin Community Foundation (ACF) fundholders consistently rise to meet the moment for Central Texas. From flood recovery to sustaining trusted community voices to filling gaps in food access, ACF fundholders mobilize with speed, empathy, and a deep commitment to our shared home.
At ACF, we have a unique vantage point. We get to witness the way generosity moves through a community—quickly, strategically, and right here in Central Texas. This past year was no exception. Through ACF’s local partnerships and expertise, fundholders turn individual generosity into meaningful, lasting impact.

Responding with Heart: Flood Relief

The catastrophic flooding in July was one of the most significant tragedies in our state resulting in at least 135 deaths. It displaced families, damaged homes and businesses, and left communities in urgent need of support after such loss. The need was immediate, and so was the response. Over a span of eight weeks, ACF fundholders gave over $855,000 to support flood relief efforts. ACF quickly processed and directed the surge of gifts to trusted organizations, including the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, Central Texas Community Foundation, and Austin Disaster Relief Network.
Strengthening Local Voices: Public Media
When funding for public broadcasting became uncertain, ACF fundholders recognized that trusted local media is a cornerstone of a strong community. Through ACF, they increased grantmaking support for KUT, Austin’s NPR station, and PBS, to help ensure vital reporting, education, and storytelling continue.
“We have been shaped by the things we learned on public television. Our children had the same opportunity, and as electronic devices boomed, public television was a reliable educational entertainment option. Our grandchild deserves to have quality programming and free broadcasting too. It’s important to support public television funding so outstanding programs can shape future generations,” said Patti and David Steinwedell, ACF Fundholders.
By working with ACF, fundholders could give efficiently and strategically. These gifts showed a shared understanding that when we invest locally, we sustain the institutions that strengthen Central Texas.
Meeting Critical Needs: Food Insecurity
Distribution at Central Texas Food Bank
In November, when SNAP benefits expired, thousands of families were left unsure of where their next meal would come from. The Central Texas Food Bank experienced a 30% increase in demand for its services.
ACF immediately issued a call to action and provided a $50,000 unrestricted grant to the Central Texas Food Bank. Fundholders followed with an additional $123,000 in grants, and many made direct contributions to the Food Bank beyond that total.
Turning Generosity into Impact
Across every example, one theme stands out: ACF fundholders don’t just respond to the times—they invest in the future of Central Texas, approximately 70% of fundholder grantmaking staying local.
Their giving strengthens the systems that hold our community together, from emergency response to sustaining local organizations providing critical services. With ACF’s expertise, efficient grantmaking, and philanthropic advising, generosity becomes impact that lasts.
