Since 1998, Capital IDEA has aimed to lift Austinites with low incomes out of poverty and into highly-skilled positions in the healthcare and high-tech industries.

With Austin Community Foundation’s support through the community grant program, Capital IDEA has given hundreds of hard-working adults, like Tishika, the necessary support to have an opportunity to transform their lives and that of their families by becoming Registered Nurses.

When Tishika Bruno heard about Capital IDEA, she just had her fourth child, was unemployed and relying on food stamps, Medicaid, and government housing to get by. With Capital IDEA’s sponsorship, Tishika enrolled in Austin Community College to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse.

“My Capital IDEA Career Navigator, Maria, was so supportive and believed in me on days I couldn’t,” says Tishika. She graduated with her Associate’s Degree in Nursing in 2010 and began working as an oncology nurse at Seton soon after.

Tishika no longer needs any public assistance and says of her experience, “It was difficult but, with Capital IDEA’s support, I was able to get the education I needed to land my dream job as a Registered Nurse!” Tishika plans to begin working toward her master’s degree soon and continues to excel in her career, receiving numerous awards and promotions.
